Amerindian
Series, 2021–2022
A multi-year project on the human body and DNA on a continental scale. Amerindian traces the genetic link between the Indigenous peoples of the Americas — from Alaska to Patagonia — and their connection to Asia across the Bering Strait.
These are large-format portraits in airbrushed pencil, charcoal, pastel and oil: wide-eyed faces looking straight ahead, with the textiles and landscapes of each people. The same question that runs through the Steel sculptures — what we share, where we come from — appears here at the intimate scale of drawing.
